Amusing design row
Was it cartoon character Homer Simpson or the New York based designer Deger Cengiz who invented the Attitude Chair first? The debate raged on various design blogs last summer and many fans of The Simpsons TV series claimed that the designer had plagiarised the chair, which was shown in episode 11(!) years ago. Cengiz claims resolutely that he watches very little TV and had never seen the episode in question of the popular animated series about the Simpson family, and that he only has admiration for the series’ creators for coming up with the same ‘functional’ idea as himself – that teenagers with an attitude would no longer fall backwards when they insisted on rocking their chairs back and forwards. The mere 13 signed examples of the Attitude Chair, which
was produced as a limited edition by Voos Furniture, sold out quickly. Maybe to the less angry Simpsons fans.
