Turning the first turf for new production works
Swedish furniture solutions company Kinnarps is investing £2M in a new production works in Skillingaryd, Sweden for manufacturing polyether foam. The investment will simplify production, reduce environmental impact and improve the development potential for new products.
The site will be about 2000 square meters and be located alongside Kinnarps existing plant in Skillingaryd. The works, scheduled for completion in 2009, will be built to strict environmental criteria demanded by Kinnarps, Länsstyrelse (the County administrative board) and the Vaggeryd municipality.
Polyether is used as padding material in Kinnarps furniture and is similar to foam-rubber. The new production works will account for roughly 25 per cent of Kinnarps total need for polyether.
By in-sourcing this production Kinnarps is able to cut back on transportation costs and related CO2-emissions. Furthermore, Kinnarps will now have more control over foam production… its shape, design and content, making it possible to improve its efficiency and environmental standard. Examples of positive changes being implemented are the reduction of VOC content in the production and the complete ban of Chlorine as a flame retardant, together with continuous quality improvements of the product.
Kinnarps continues to grow - sales have increased by 15 per cent during the past year – and this new facility will have a positive effect on production capacity where demand is high due to an increase in order volumes from across Europe.
“Now we can reduce costs and get better control over production and transportation”, says Branko Vukota, Managing Director for Kinnarps Production AB. “Kinnarps long term strategy is to keep production in-house instead of outsourcing. Investing in this plant is a part of that strategy, in order to strengthen our competitive advantage and safeguard local employment”.
