A focus on the environment

How are you? Are you focussed and effective at work or do you feel tired and worn out? Maybe it is all because of your surrounding environment! Kinnarps has been checking out an exciting survey from World Green Building Council about how interiors and architecture have a profound impact on us.

A basic example: Everyone is well aware of the fact that clean and fresh air makes us more alert. But how more alert? Concentration levels in the company employees included in the survey increased on average by more than 10 per cent when a new ventilation system was installed. Not to mention the radical drop in sick leave at times by up to 35 per cent. Just goes to show what a little oxygen can do! So how is it still the case that some employers neglect their surrounding environment, when people should always be the most important resource?
"It is a very simple equation; a small investment in the surrounding environment pays off by making employees feel better and as a result more efficient. This is the only reasonable way to approach things," says Staffan Haglind, Green Business Officer at Skanska.
Anyone for instance with access to daylight at work sleeps a further 45 minutes at night compared to those sitting in a window-less office room. Are you one of the unlucky ones without a window? Get a hammer out and nail up a few paintings. Art has an amazing and calming impact on stressed souls, at least according to World Green Building Council’s survey which reveals that we become both more effective and smarter when presented with eye candy. Just as the case is when companies that consistently invest in green design solutions like indoor gardens and atrium solutions can boast significantly happier and more effective employees and significantly lower sick leave figures. So what a difference the surrounding environment can make!
