Best workplace

The dream workplace? Why is it that certain companies always have the best employees? Kinnarps checks up on what it's like in Google's canteen, and has an interesting chat in the lunch queue…

For six years in succession Google has been ranked the most attractive company to work at in the USA. Everybody knows that it is a fantastic workplace with childminding and bowling alleys, tennis and a gym. But that's not all there is to it. At Google they talk about how important it is to get people to meet. It starts as early as the queue for food in the lunch canteen, where there is an explicit objective that everybody should have to wait somewhere for 3 to 4 minutes. It is the perfect time for unexpected conversations to occur and for new acquaintanceships to take shape. Lunch is eaten at long tables that are placed closely together, which encourages people to literally bump into each other. All to build a community and a social environment. ”The Google bump” has even become an established expression.

Interviews with employees also reveal that this is what is crucial for job satisfaction: Google is perceived as personal and human. A company that is good at creating friendly and considerate environments for its employees. This special ”Google atmosphere” is what the staff mention first when they are asked what is the ”best thing about work”.

And it does have to be said that a spot of tennis is fun too…
