Design experience of the year!

On your way to London this autumn? Then you shouldn't miss one of the year's biggest design and architecture events. In a unique endeavour directed by Christopher Turner, former editor-in-chief of the British design magazine 'Icon', the London Design Biennale opens on 15 September.

"The biennale should not be confused with a traditional design fair. The idea is to create a design event that can be compared with the best art exhibitions. About 40 countries will be participating with projects and installations," says Turner.

The theme for the biennale is 'Utopia in Design', based on Thomas More's cult book from 1516, which is celebrating its 500th anniversary.

"The question of how design can contribute to a better world could hardly be more timely – if it can make any contribution at all? Let's see how people react," says Turner.

The exhibition is open for three weeks at Somerset House in central London – where, incidentally, London Fashion Week had its final show earlier this year.
