55 per cent of the Earth's population now lives in cities, which consume 80 per cent of all the energy that is produced. So when we talk about the future, how can we strike a balance between environmental and economic development, and is it even possible? The survey, carried out by the Dutch design firm Arcadis, was based on three factors - "people, planet and profit".
There was no one city in the world which scored top marks in all three of these categories. Many cities in the USA, for example, are extremely highly developed when it comes to business, but have poor environmental strategies. This means that the first American city to appear on the list is Chicago, in 19th place. Instead it is Europe which dominates with seven cities ranked in the top 10.
