Long live life


In the future, the retirement age won't be 65… or 75… or even 95… The first person who could live to see their 150th birthday has already been born. Clearly, this will turn the whole of society – including our workplaces – upside down.

A tablet a day and you'll live half way to eternity. Researchers have already conducted successful experiments on mice which have reversed the process of ageing and literally made time go backwards… At the same time, experts in nanotechnology are developing an immune system in the form of millions of nanorobots that enter our bodies and remedy everything from colds to serious illnesses.

Clearly, it's wonderful to think we can have control over death but the fact that we're living ever longer is creating a number of unexpected problems and challenges. Somewhat ironically, it seems that the sixties generation will be remembered as the generation that started by destroying the planet and then went on to wreck the pension funds of the future...

The consequences of and opportunities offered by a considerably longer working life are also something that we at Kinnarps have already highlighted in our latest  Trend Report.

Indeed, for the first time in history, we are seeing four generations in the workplace at the same time and this means that everyone must be happy and find their own individual ways of working. It's important to remember that a 20 year old and a 70 year old probably have completely different needs in the workplace but that the environment must attract both.
