It is not only the technological advancements that are escalating with new software and innovations that change everyday life. Amongst architects "intelligent materials" are the hottest topics right now. How about acquiring luminous walls for the office?
The innovation is based on a discovery by a university* in Colombia, where scientists have managed to develop a cement mixture which absorbs light energy. The application areas are of course endless, anything from facades to car parks to roads and street lighting. The absolute best use for the luminous cement is in inaccessible areas not lit by the standard street lighting network. Even the environmental advantages are great, firstly from an energy aspect and secondly the cement is relatively easy to recycle.
