A smart workplace makes for smart staff


Committed staff are a company’s most important asset. They are more focussed, more loyal and make the world of difference when it comes to profit. But how do we create that dream workplace where most people are happy?

Everyone knows how important it is, but according to a study by the American Psychological Association, only 13 per cent of all office workers in the Western world feel a genuine, deep commitment to their job. Imagine what it would mean for the working atmosphere and actual profits if we could transform all dissatisfied and bored employees. Don’t think it’s just about higher salaries. No, what determines whether we are happy at work has a wide array of other explanations and solutions. The most important factor that emerged from the study is the interior design. The old saying “The eyes are the window of the soul” should not be underestimated. Boring and bureaucratic interior design, where we sit locked in offices from 9 am to 5 pm, inhibits our emotional life. We diminish ourselves, become uptight, unimaginative and lose our initiative. And what’s worse is that like the creatures of habit that we are, after a while we accept having to sit in cramped, uncomfortable and noisy premises without question.

That’s why cleverly designed workplaces that encourage creativity and intelligent conversation are so valuable, creating an inclusive company culture where people dare to be themselves. They also result in the contagious feeling that change is possible. The study by the American Psychological Association found that such companies run on average 20 per cent more effectively.
