A new meeting culture has halved our workplaces – instead we invest in large social spaces.
There was a time when a large desk indicated diligence and power. This may still be true to a certain extent – but the size of the desk has shrunk somewhat… A recent American study compared the size of our workplaces through history. The study findings indicated, for instance, that 40 years ago an employee had an average of over 15 square metres at their disposal – today it's less than six square metres. The main explanation for the decrease in space is of course the rapid technological advances that have transformed our meeting culture. When our way of working changes, we also change our interior design, and companies become increasingly focused on social spaces such as coffee bars, lounges and larger meeting rooms. This is also seen in Kinnarps' market-leading range.
