Materia, one of Kinnarps' product brands, presents two of this year's greatest
furniture must-haves, inspired by photo frames and the circus ring.
Think about your favourite easy chair! You will probably get an image in your head of a rather large and unwieldy piece situated far into a corner. But new times require new furniture, which is particularly true for our workplaces.
Two of the major groundbreaking new products of the year come from Materia, which, with Frame and Elephant, is turning the way we traditionally see seating furniture on its head.
Frame is designed by Ola Giertz, who found his inspiration in a photo frame. And it is most certainly something completely new – it is not an easy chair, neither is it a chair or a stool. Perhaps all of the above in one and the same design! Curl up in it for a rest, straddle it like a rocker or invite a colleague for a cup of coffee in the frame. Perfect for the new workplace! The graphic design of the Frame is as simple as it is brilliant. "Frame is the first piece of furniture I have designed for Materia. We met last year and they liked my idea straight away," says Ola, who describes his inventive process as constant daydreaming in search of the perfect idea. His collection is broad, from
innovative seating furniture to restaurant furnishings and fittings, but always with a very unique twist.
"I hope that there will be siblings for Frame in the future. I have a great deal of ideas when it comes to developing the design further," says Ola, who has been nominated for the Materia Newcomer of the Year award and for Entrepreneur of the Year in Skåne.
Whilst Ola may be relatively new on the design scene, Carl Öjerstam is one of Sweden's biggest design stars, with a number of international awards earned throughout a career spanning more than 20 years and including everything from home electronics to store interiors. But when he accepted the challenge to update the classic stool for Materia, it turned out to be one of his toughest challenges. Carl took inspiration for Elephant from the circus ring and the stools elephants stand on. The repetitive pattern of Elephant means that it looks the same from every angle, a beautiful everyday sculpture. And that is exactly what we want, a piece of furniture that dares to command its space, whilst also
easily fitting in. This is something Elephant easily manages, regardless of whether it is used in a kitchen or in the most prominent place in an office. And as with all thoughtthrough ideas, it is available in several different sizes – 430, 630 and 780 millimetres.
