What is Lamine?

LamineTM is a unique, low-risk, paint-type finish applied directly to chipboard without the use of glues and veneers. The result is a hardwearing, totally recyclable worksurface available in a one-colour finish, such as white, or realistic wood effect, negating the need for a laminate or melamine surface.

A board with Lamine™ is processed 14 times and requires a 200-metre long lacquer line in the production shop. Kinnarps’s lacquer line is completely free of solvents and each layer rolled over the board is dried by UV-light.

Lamine™ is manufactured from completely untreated chipboard (1) onto which a flatting varnish is first rolled (2) to even out any irregularities in the surface of the chipboard. The board is then dried by UV-light and polished.

The next stage in the procedure is to roll another two layers of flatting varnish onto the surface (3). These are not polished but dried by UV-light between applying the layers. The fourth treatment adds another layer of varnish/lacquer (4), that is subsequently polished again. The surface is now completely even and ready for the pigmentation step.

Three layers of pigmented UV-varnish (5) (each layer is dried separately) are now rolled onto the board to create the background tone on which to form the pattern. Then comes the actual wood design: a beechwood pattern, for instance, requires three different layers (three different rollers) to create the right pattern and effect. (6).

We are now ready to seal the pattern with a thick layer of a highly hardwearing and durable lacquer (7) that conserves the pattern (i.e. the lacquer used on parquet floors). Of course we continue to use solvent-free lacquers that are dried by UV-light. Finally we add a layer of matt lacquer (8) to create the correct finish and sensation.
