New, smart technology was designed to make life easier for us but, in actual fact, we're working more hours than ever. How did this happen and how can we achieve a better work/life balance?
In the old days, if you wanted to contact someone after office hours, you rang them at home. If the phone was engaged or if there was no answer, you had to wait until the next morning when you saw them again. Nowadays, many people pride themselves on replying to their emails instantly. Big or small, whatever the time of day, it makes no difference. Multitasking has become the buzzword of the day but it has also created a culture in which work is present in everything we do. In the long term, of course, this is counter-productive and it is hardly conducive to a sustainable society. Nowadays, researchers tell us that we need to re-visit our attitude to time. Working long hours does not guarantee success; in fact, quite the opposite, it guarantees stress and burnout. Instead, we must ask ourselves how we spend the hours in our day. Be honest:
• How many long, drawn out meetings couldn't be replaced by an email or a quick phone call?
• Are you working long hours to impress other people, to make them think you're loyal and capable?
• How can it be that some people manage to do so much more than others?
