TREND 5: Micro-multinational


Do you remember the singer Paul Young, who, at the start of the 1980s, had the whole world humming along to his huge hit Wherever I lay my hat, that's my home? Thirty years later feeling at home is more about finding a fast broadband connection... We have reached our fifth look into the future in Kinnarps' Trend Report.

Did you know that a third of all office employees in the USA spend more than 50 percent of their time outside the workplace? Developments in technology have made our lives increasingly borderless. We carry out our meetings online or stay at home to avoid the commute. Others prefer a cosy coffee shop or the silence of the library when that difficult report needs to be finished. Another alternative amongst the growing throng of self-employed and freelancers is to choose pop-up workplaces. There is access to wifi and basic services, and it is, in fact, much more pleasant to have someone to talk to than having an internet coffee on Skype... 

All of this means that our view of the traditional workplace is changing. Why should we be satisfied with boring furnishings and grey metal filing cabinets just because we are at work? Instead our workplaces must be more and more like home to attract skilled employees, and offer freelancers and temporary workers the opportunity to blend into with company staff. 

"People want their workplaces to offer the same comforts that they would have at home, regardless of whether it is having a place to store their things, allowing personal space or creating a sense of community," says Wayne Hemingway from Hemingway Design.
