"Demand that your furniture is produced sustainably using non-toxic materials, designed for a long lifespan, and prepared for renewal."
- Johanna Ljunggren, Sustainability Manager, Kinnarps
At Kinnarps, we create truly sustainable solutions. We have devoted ourselves to this every day since the business started in 1942. This involves focusing on creating real benefit, for our customers and for our planet. Every year we summarise our efforts and report on both long-term and short-term goals in our sustainability report called “The Better Effect”.
Our design process always begins with the needs and behaviours of people and organisations. By identifying these, we create furniture and solutions that promote wellbeing, are intuitive to use, and can be updated or renewed as needed. This gives our solutions a long lifecycle, minimal environmental impact, and a low cost over time.
Most of our furniture is produced in our state-of-the-art production units in Kinnarp, Skillingaryd, Jönköping, and Tranås, Sweden. Our production is order-based, meaning we only produce what is truly needed. Having our production in Sweden allows us to better control quality, efficiency, and sustainability throughout the value chain. Thanks to our high share of fossil-free energy, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly lower compared to production in countries more reliant on fossil fuels.
The finished interior design solution is delivered through our own logistics and delivery system, using trucks that run on fossil-free fuel wherever possible. We pack our products using reusable blankets, saving approximately 270 kg of single-use packaging per container. This packing method enables us to manage with two trucks where others would need three.
The longer the lifespan of a piece of furniture, the lower its environmental impact is from a usage perspective. That’s why we focus on creating furniture with the potential for a long life. We also offer a range of services to extend the lifecycle of your interiors – including needs analyses, maintenance services, and updating.
We regularly participate in research projects focusing on sustainability. One example is GRACE, a project aimed at supporting the green transition in the manufacturing industry. Through our involvement, we focus on further strengthening our expertise in sustainable product development.
Kinnarps' sustainability strategy is based on our overall vision and business plan, which involves creating inspiring and effective interior design solutions – to contribute to prosperity and wellbeing. We have evaluated our operations against the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and identified the ones that we have the greatest opportunity – directly or indirectly – to influence. We have then linked them to our most prioritised areas.
Our goal is for all raw materials in our products to be traceable and from responsible sources. All wood raw material should be FSC® certified or recycled. Materials should be used in an even more resource-efficient manner.
Our goal is to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050. We’re also working continuously to improve energy efficiency throughout our operations and to use more energy from fossil-free sources.
Our goal is to create healthier working environments, with fewer chemicals, and free from materials classified as harmful to public health or the environment.
Our goal is to have verified good working conditions throughout our value chain, contributing positively to the social development on the sites where we and our partners operate.
Our goal is for all our products to be designed for a long lifespan, and for our interior design solutions to be part of a circular flow that prolongs the life of products and materials. We use more recycled materials in our products and find innovative ways of using leftover material from our operations.
Our goal is to create healthier working environments, with fewer chemicals, and free from materials classified as harmful to public health or the environment.
”By thinking long-term from the start, we create sustainable solutions.”
